bronze strigil The scraper welded(?) along its back to an extension of the handle. The handle, like the scraper, made of sheet bronze. The handle strip has been folded out, up, and in again, to make a suitable thickness for grip; a neat turn-back .005 wide all round prevents the edges of the strip from cutting the hand, and gives a solid effect. The extension of the handle follows the curve (longitudinal and lateral) of the scraper, and is decorated along its back by 3 pairs of raised lines, the outer of which form the borders of the part of the extension beyond the ends of the turned-back border. The folded-in end of the handle strip abuts on the beginning of the curved part, with 2 corner points and a central tongue. The object has been cleaned and waxed, the folded-in end of the handle pressed back into place (cf pre-cleaning photograph), and a central section of the scraper restored in wax; the resulting curve and length are somewhat inaccurate.
