APOLLO RECORDING

Key to the Apollo recording system. The date written on the tag of any find is the note book running "Diary" under the date all finds from any stratum and the page of the note book on which a section appears illustrating the stratification is written on the left hand margin of the Diary to facilitate finding the diary account of any particular stratum plus a list of numbered finds from it. The tag on the find bears also the page number of the section plus the number of the date of the stratum in addition to the date. My impression of the date of the same page that carries the section. My impression of the date of coins, lamps etc, is to be found in the note book list of "Finds". In addition to the list of finds the diary will give a description of the stratum and all that was found in it including stones, whether worked or rough, and tiles. I have indicated where I have stored worked blocks and tiles in the Diary. If the location is changed I have made a note on the left margin. Any object which has been removed from the sherd bag after the stratum and its contents have been written up in the Diary is listed on the margin of the Diary. In this way it is possible within a few minutes to have a list of numbered finds for every stratum, other contents of the stratum, and its character, the number of stones and tiles from the stratum and we re these can be found. All tiles which are not given a find number are left on the site. All sherds are stored in the Apollo guard houses. The page number of the section illustrating the stratum plus the no. of the stratum serves as a catalogue number. The bags are stacked by this number sequence. Thus 2321-6 proceeds 2325-1. I have also stated in the Diary how many sherds and tiles have been found in any one stratum. If I throw any out I state the proportion thrown out on the back of the tag on the bag. Some sherd bags bear no section page number. These are all stacked together in chronological sequence, also in the Apollo guard houses under miscellaneous sherds. The catalogue card for any object should have a cross reference to the note book find number, its date and the page of the note book where the cross section appears illustrating the stratification.
