157 Nov. 17: Today we reached the end of the preserved line of lower-molding podium blocks; latteus still continuing easterly the euthynteria far away.

Opposite the possible stairway (p. 154), on the south face of the N. wall, we are doing a trial to see if this is there repeated. So far nothing has appeared, & the soft earth makes us suspect that the stones have been taken here.

Today we also lifted all of the large blocks resting the euthynteria line on the S. side, and have set on their back edges all other seatblocks found in earlier work (Trench 3, Trench 9 N & S.

Mr. Megaw visited us this morning & he will discuss with the Commissioner the possibility of removing the trees within the "course". Nov. 18: The search for the stairway on the N wall was unyielding. Plain earthy fill goes down well below the euthynteria level. In this are small stones & chips, but no large (except what a bit of a seat-block), but no large stones directly in the trench, although there appear to be to W. We will therefore fill this trench with stone Nov. 19: Worked only 2 hours, then stopped by rain Nov. 20: We are tidying up this long trench, which we will take in about 2 more meters, bringing it to between 31 & 32 M of the S. central gate.

Started a new trench, Trench 7 extension, which will run along the euthynteria line from the North Central Gate westward. This we hope to carry west to opposite the place where Trench 9 went out steps. Photo 17 shows this as we commenced.
