Trench 11 May 21, 1947. Continuing these final trials, we opened a trench this morning in the center of the sphendone, starting at about 10 m. distance east of the West Gate, in appropriately the center of the semicircle, and proceeding eastward. In A, at 30-35 cm. depth, a stronis of small havara stones, probably resting on bedrock, appears. It is quite level, and is probably the original floor laid to even out the bedrock. We are clearing to this at present; soil over it is Stratum 1, this rock-filling Stratum 2. A sherd of a coarse white soft pipe pipe (rubbed) came from on this strois in A. In B, pipeline apparently in situ, running almost with trench (turning, however, to north). In Γ & E, bedrock shows through stratum 2. To avoid convlox with olive after H, opened second trench to south (c. 3 meters), & continued. Here bedrock close to surface. In Z, piece of pipe. In Λ, square post-hole. In I, cutting in bedrock May 22nd. In H the bedrock goes down to 60 cm. below the surface and is hopeless. In Λ & I, however, it comes to the surface, and since cutting & a few coarse sherds here appear, we are running sounding and clearing bedrock wherever it appears high. Meanwhile, H is being partly refilled. Only in high bedrock, here, is there hope of finding traces of ancient workings. Λ - Hole for post 10 × 10 × 20 I - Cutting 20 × 110 deep × 12 max
