153 Trench 10

May 19th, 1947May 19th, 1947. Work was again commenced with the object of finding some trace of aphesis and terma. Starting with the first possibility, Trench 10 was opened. This is at the east end, connecting with A of Trench 2, as shown in the accompanying diagram.

Finds: In Z, filling, in which frag lamp (Type 27) In A - Θ/, few sherds + bit of glass In A, reused cornice block, set in rock-cut bed upside down, with square hole cut in upper surface. In Δ, square hole. Another in K In Λ, cutting for square block, with square hole in center. In Γ and M, small bits of pipe. Quarry-cuttings everywhere. Opened: A, A' - M

May 20thMay 20th Continued in H + M, opened N - Γ. Since nothing but unworked bedrock was found in any of these exploratory directions, it appears that the only transverse workings of significance are those running from H to Λ; we shall therefore turn our attention tomorrow to a search for the τ ε ρ μ α. Bedrock in Trench 2, O - Φ, was recleaned. Finds: In Trench 2, in obstacles not previously dug out, sacks of sherds. In Π, curious rock-cuttings from plow share?

Now 6 (see p. 146) In widening - or extending - this trench at both N + S, results were disappointing. All blocks of any outline have been removed on both sides. Surface soil (c 20 cm thick)
