For trial trenches 5 + 6 cf. p. 43 f.

Date: Excavated June 15th - 20th, 1939 Region: Center of South Wall, small side gate Notebook: p. 45, 46 Sections: 1 is the region N of the door (A-Δ) ; 2, the door itself (K-Λ, Ξ-Ο, Σ-Τ) (I-N-P + M-Π-Υ are unexcavated); and 3 is the narrow westerly strip outside of the door (part of Σ-Τ-Υ, and Φ-Ψ). Section 1. A-Δ Stratification 1. Stratum 1: Surface soil, blackened by vegetation, about 25 cm. deep overall. Cluttred fill; few sherds. Stratum 2: a redder soil, again badly disturbed and soft; considerable sherds but very disturbed context. Stratum 3: a hard red pack at c. 40 cm, in which is much small white chipped stone. We cleared only to the top of this stratum. Architecture. The blocks have all been removed here, but a low foundation of small stones shows the ey thy interior line in A + Δ, and behind it rises a mound of stone-and-earth pack representing the remains of the filling. Thus the section is in precisely the same state as trench 1 section 3.
