31. June 3rd - Trench 2 T' - Γ'

The continuation of this trench to the south revealed the following conditions not far below the surface: T': The bedrock is cut back as the plan indicates, before it a straight, N-S quarry cutting continues south; the bedrock after cut back continues N in a somewhat curving line, and the space between it and the trench has a fill of medium-sized stones (broken) at about 20 cm. Υ': The wall of bedrock to the E turns abruptly east just inside the S edge here; the small stones, as in T, rise higher W of the break; the bedrock continues again in a narrow strip on the E edge of the trench - the rest has stony fill as in T'. Φ': Narrow E edge of bedrock & stones at 20 as T' Ψ'here bedrock is cut away broken & [illegible] N into a ledge the broken piece lies where it fell. The rock continues to skirt the E of the trench; the fill is the same except for a large fallen stone in the NW corner X': Rock & fill same (bedrock edges lower, earth of block earth rises to height of 30 cm above bedrock, broken here; on W and also south deeper to stone fill (35 cm). In NW corner, pillar stone. In N end of bedrock strip a deep vertical cutting Ω': Here again the end of the wall appeared, at 20 cm. The stones are some uneven, as down, but the N corner is good. No cessant yet apparent. F' Continuation of wall in S half; to N bedrock risesto surface, cut for wall. p. 35

Trench 3

Δ. This section drops, 1.5 meters to the S and 1.65 to the south, to bed rock, which is smooth in the E and rougher in the west, but level. The great stone at the N, extending into E, is part of a pier, made (drawing) of three courses. A little within the N side of the wall is a course the face of a wall stone wall flush with the pier E: Here same as D, with flat rock. On S side the rock is cut, || to the trench wall & just within it - it rises from the south to a height of 30 cm (E end) sloping to 10. (west. In the SE corner, against this cutting, is part of a pot in situ - three other sherds have been taken. E': This, a S extention of E, carries the rock floor irregularly to the S, where the soil is 40 cm. above it. Above the rock floor some 10 cm. was a bed of ashes, among them an architectural coping frag. similar to those in 1. The W central part is cut out into a roughly pot-shaped hole, 60 diam, 40 deep.
