May 27Early this morning a coin was found in section Γ, trench C1191 [stamp: C1191], at spot marked x., almost at the bottom of the 3rd stratum, about 1,10 below the original surface, in solid red earth (very small stones) below one of large, fallen wall-stones. Photo 35- coin in situ. The fill here is promising - hard packed and definite in the 3rd stratum. A second metal object was found (broken in digging) - a small cylinder with the outside threaded. also a piece of a heavy vase from this same section, all near the coin. May 29th: In section B' - E' there is quite apparently a stratum between 2 and 3 of dark red earth, about 10 cm. thick on the E side. It does not carry across the trench in B-E to the E side, and was so thin there as to be missed, because of the heavy stones + dust about it. It is directly below the level upon which the wall-stones fell - against the wall c. 1 m below surface. It will be marked as 2 a. Roll 11, Photo 1: B looks with most of stratum 2 removed in B'-E', from above. R. 11, 2. Same from below, showing top of stratum 4 - in B-E. 11, 3 - Close up of B-E with 3 removed (.) 4, 4 - Section E-D - slightly beyond the W face of the trench here a wall runs down, N-S and sloping to ground. It is loosely made, probably for packing. We are cleaning to its E face. Photos 6 + 7: A'-A to D'-D: In A-bedrock + red soil (4); in B part of 4 removed; Γ with 4; B' with part of 2 a removed showing 3; F' with 2a
