DIARY from p. 1445. 1452

8 April 1949 Began digging Grid I - Λ, north 4-14, strat. 1. Continuing to remove Grid A-Z & A-y, south 2-6, strat. 1 - ploughed up sandy soil. Continued removing Grid Z-H, north 17-19, p. 1405-5, a strat. consisting of many large rough stones. Found a coin here F 58. Continuing to strain all earth from this area round about well. Began removing Grid A-E, north 18-20 immediately north of tomb monument, strat. 5-6 (see section p. 1405-56) This strat. appears to be deliberate fill - not debris though many rough stones are coming out - a fill of sand or sandy soil - some gravel and many small rough stones. Finished removing E-H, north 17-19 (to west of above area & S.W. n.w. of monument, strat. 5 (see also section p. 1405-5). Here strat. 5 was almost entirely composed of debris with many large, rough stones & sandy soil. The top of A-E, north 18-20 - just north of monument strat 5-(6) (section p. 1405), may have been a ground level. It is just slightly below stones composing top of stairway. cont p 1456
