656 Diary Tuesday 6th May, 1941 Began filling Pit 178. 1st 2nd & 3rd altar (counting from S. to now down) of pit 178 have only one stone over filling & this has surface followed hill slope so did not fill to dromos level. Bay above fairly clean sand w. yellow grey surface - fall of roof th[illegible] limestone block appearing. Some on edge as 1, 5 in (greater inclination than dromos slope). Bay 6 has fewer stones. Late 2 on dromos slope - 3 on top of slope - about four feet in 1, 2, & 3 Bay & mostly brown earth. Fewer & smaller stones over 5th altar - few stones & only small one over 6.
