[margin left: Drain from room 10 & re-enforcing wall] It is now my opinion that the so called 're-enforcing' walls of the Bath are [re- ?] enforcing walls in fact, and that they were constructed in the 4th century A.D. after an earthquake which caused some damage to the building. The one east of room 1 was constructed over a large drain which served to drain water from room 10. (S.E. room). After the construction of the re-enforcing wall, a new, very much smaller drain was excavated within the wall connecting up with a terracotta pipe line still in situ just east of doorway of room 10 (the doorway leading to room 1). The excavation in the east face of the east wall of room 1, above the level of the later drain appears to be an explorative one, as it can have served no useful purpose, it being too high for a drain at any period. See Film 127-32. In this area
