DIARY 1506 Cistern 3 lamps to the best of my knowledge come in before the principate of Augustus at the very earliest, and are in com[illegible] use much later and at least until the middle of the 1st century A.D. As stratum 9 was the first real stratum after one, 2-8 incl, being all the same and obviously a 1st century A.D. dump, it is fairly safe to assume, I think, that 9-12 incl. belong to an earlier period, and is an accumulation dating from the last period of use. That the top of 9 was level, shows that there was water in the cistern at the time of this accumulation.

Hellenistic pottery and 2 Ptolemaic coins in the settling pit (10-12 incl.) and the absence of Imperial lamps and thin blown glass indicate a period as early as the 3rd quarter of the 1st century B.C. with the exception of a few sherds including Cnidian amphora
