DIARY
[margin left: W. of room 4] cave, (see above) is very loose soil - very dark from 16-19 north (θ-θ). Lgt brown from 20-21 north. It consists of a very great many small rough stones, larger stones being conspicuous by their absence. The indication is that this is an ancient dump during a re-construction period. Larger stones would have been kept for re-building, possibly after an earthquake. This fill would represent what could not be reused for rebuilding after the destruction of buildings in the vicinity.
May 4-7 incl- absent from excavations on account of illness - "flu". During this period [margin left: Room 7] in Room 7, Bath, strat. 1. was removed. See section p. 1257. This consisted of many heavy rough stones and worked blocks. The latter have been piled up at under Mr. Hills suggestion at Trench 9, w-v, South 0-2. Dark, loose soil. For strat 2 digging east part separately - part that is east of row of columlns See Film 102 30, 33, 34 & 35. Film 123 - 20-24. cont. p. 1280.
