DIARY cont from p. 1222 18 Apr. 49

Removing dark surface soil among worked blocks trench 9 G-K, north 14-18, rather loose soil containing a good quantity of round rough stones as well as worked blocks. I note now that these are coming from 18-22 and not from 14-18; it is obviously all fallen stuff. Removing earth and rough stones from room west of central room (Bath) depth, 1.20 - 1.30 m from top of north wall. See Film 119 - 12. Cleaning floor of hypocaust, E. room, leaving sample of burnt stratum between 2 most westerly brick pillars in most southerly row of 5. Cleaning out passage way leading from central room to hypocaust. Removing upper debris, Bath, room 3, (see p 1229) 2-4 m from north wall, 0-1.50 m from east wall. See Film 119 - 20. Unlike soil in upper debris elsewhere, so far in this room, soil here is light brown. Apparently more compact so roots could not get into it. Removing strat. 2 from Cont p 1232
