Foreman began removing by mistake part of p. 1059-2 [circled: x] / Placed few sherds in bag, cleaned off, and began digging strat 3, as planned, reddish soil with few small stones only, very few tiles, moderate amount of sherds - mostly on floor, Foreman of opinion that most of this stratum is wall debris. As I look carefully to figure 3 I find the difference between 2 [circled: x] and 3 may be only due to pointing of gypsum on the walls which made a harder whiter stratum where it fell. the face of the walls [illegible] in save for this difference all above floor appears to be a fairly homogenous stratum. 2 x appears to be the same as 3, and 2 y may have been an intrusive pit in 3, - the fill of this intrusive pit being 2 y. See plan p 1059 and section p. 1045. Removed Trench 9, strat 3 of E-8-E wall, south 1-2 m, see section p. 1051. Reddish earth, fair number of stones fist size and smaller, rough stones, fair number of tiles marked and placed nearby. S.W of stake E, on south line of Trench 9. cont. p. 1076
