July 12 1954 We make a cut 2.00 sq. in NW corner of SE Bldg where stairs are not preserved to see if we can determine the nature of the original NW room here. Soft brown earth with considered no. of stones. at level of 1.80 below the top of the highest stair as restored we found an irregular but firm floor of yellowish brown earth this probably originally covered the line of TC pipes proceeding W-E out of the west wall. We remove this floor except for area along N. side in line with the pipes pipe line Ca 5 cm below floor at east + ca 20 below at west we find bedrock. Cut into it as indicated on plan is a rectangular opening filled w. earth + stones 0.55 x 0.80. One corner of the cutting extends beneath the staircase wall. We dig out the cutt[illegible]. Below a layer of stones we find soft earth with some sherds. The cutting is ca 0.45 deep its n + s sides vertical + its east + west undercut.
