Trench I Extension (plan p 18) In order to investigate the disposal of water from the big stone jar in the NW corner of the court we make a small cut ca 2.00 m wide W - E + 1.00 N - S. of the jar at the west end of Trench I.

We find that the curbing around the jar is faced on the outside with white plaster. This goes down to a level ca — below the top of the ea west stylobate When it stops we find an adjacent level with spilled white plaster, obviously the level at which the builders worked in setting up the jar. The level is that below Layer 3 in Trench I (p 19) The level below Layer 2 thus is probably the courtyard level when the jar was in use.

From the earth in Layer 2 here comes a fragment of a TC centaur: torso wd. beard on chest.

Digging thru the level w. spilled white plaster we uncover the extension of the cutting in bedrock noted p. 23. It is 1.10 x 1.10, but with irregular sides and cut ca 40 into bedrock. Its bottom is ca — below the level of the west stylobate The pipe line (2 sections) leading from the water jar leads toward it but there is no certain

evidence that it actually connected. The pipelene seems to be plugged up with plaster similar to the plaster on the curbing. Possibly the curbing was originally for the open mouth of a cistern, the pipe line & put in bedrock for its over flow. The jar might then have been merely placed over the filled mouth of the cistern
