June 22-1954 The earth bank now appears to be brachoo (bedrock) with a cutting. Just below this line of cutting find the tumble of a wall, or at any rate fallen stones which appear to have belonged to a wall.

Establish a temporary bench mark on the root of a tree jutting into the trench. The bed rock is -56cm.

In the remainder of the trench the fill remains uniform. Encounter a distinct change of earth (from reddish) to yellowish brown at -1.1510m. Call this level 1. Isolate what may be an ancient intrusion at this level.

Clean out intrusion. Soil becomes almost immediately red again. Clear away tumble, with which are mixed many fragments of a pithos. The tumble goes very deep, the lower part being embedded in harder earth than the upper. The stones in general are rather small and irregular but there are a few larger, including river-stones, among them.
