16.5.3921:14 (from p.25) Remove the black ashy earth in the north ("b" of.small plan, p.24). It is clearly distinct from the browner stonier earth in c. The black stops at a hard gritty red clay floor at 8.11. This same 8.11 floor continues into section a, where there was red earth over it. Here it is at 8.19. Photo Bam. 39.191 of a at 8.19, b at 8.11, c at 7.88 Dig through c. This earth is loose + stony, and stops at 8.09 with gritty red-brown earth, less firm than that in a + b. In the S-E there is brown sandy earth (d) at 7.88. It covers stones which seem to be the remnants of an earlier wall. The 8.11= 8.19 floor is the same as the 8.00 floor in 21:14 original.

17.5.39 Remove the earth in d, finding part of a wall apparently belonging to the early complex. It is parallel with the rock cutting. A bit of chavara plaster runs up onto it in in the N. Clear N. in the line of the wall to 21:13. The wall rests on clayey brown earth at 8.02.
