The top-soil stops at 3.49 (at point f of plan, p. 120) with reddishbrown earth.
Digging below 3.49 we find a firm layer of more gritty and gravelly earth, at 3.61. Numerous sherds were found over this level, which may be an occupation level. It was cut through in places by our men.
30-5-38 Finish clearing the 3.61 level, and cut through gritty brown earth to a firm level with many white particles, at 3.74. This seems to be a floor. In the west there is a great deal of white clay with stones. This same level is at 3.61 at point h. of plan, p. 120
31-5-38 Dig below 3.61 = 3.74, in the central part, and find a firm gritty floor at 3.80 at point g of plan
1-6-38 Finish clearing this floor. It is at 3.78 (h) = 3.80 (g) = 3.89 (f.) Dig down in the line of the wall, where there is a change to redder. earth, and clear it for some distance.
