TRENCH 13
19-5-38 Start trench 13, W. of and parallel to tr. 12. It is 1.50 wide and long. In the north find a large piece of rock and numerous small stones in whitish clay at The surface is at / 6.39 S., 6.64 N.
20-5-38 Find intrusions S. of the rock & stone section. Below the plowed top-soil the earth goes down as in tr. 12 S, clean and sandy, light brown becoming gradually redder as it goes down, but without any sharp divisions.
24-5-38 (N) (S) Finish clearing to 7.64 = 7.84, in gravelly brown earth as noted above. In the north, by the large stone, several smaller stones appear at this level. Since a large intrusion was first isolated at this level we put all the sherds so far together. Dig below 7.64 = 7.84, and find a brown level with many small stones, sloping down from 7.64 in the N. (the latter already found) (To p. 113)
