18-5-38 Trench 11 (from p. 73)

Today we found the inner face of all four walls of this structure. It is 1.80 m. square. It seems that the oblique line of stones in the west may be fallen (but still in their relative position) from the west wall. Photos 280-1 at 2.00 (grey strosis) Dig below 2.00 through very loose greyish earth with many loose stones, some very large.

19-5-38 After drawing a rough diagram as a guide in case they are to be replaced (see p. 80), we remove the oblique line of stones against the W. wall. Photo 283 of stones before removal. Dig down through the same very loose grey fill with large stones apparently fallen from the walls. The earth begins to change to less stoney, and red, at closing time.

20-5-38 The pit continues down, looking more and more like a huge well as we continue down. Reach a total depth of 4.60 today. (To p. 101)
