12-511-5-38TRENCH 12 (from p. 61) three two intrusions which had escaped notice until now. Yesterday we extended all but the southern four meters of the trench by a section 2M. wide along the west side.

Margin left: 12-5-38

The digging on 10-5-38 (with the assistance) of Tryphon) was not very well done, and can now be checked in the light of the west extension. The top-soil stops in all but the very s. end at about 30 cm. at a layer of firm whitish earth. Careful cleaning reveals that this is, in rather more than the northern half of the trench, a level of fallen (?) white brick, at ca. 6.85 Photos 274-5 of brick layer at 6.85 cleaned to show individual bricks.

Margin left: 13-5-38

Cut through the brick strosis, finding a very firm whitish layer in the central part of the trench. This is almost pure broken sandstone, & very solid. There is a slight change to darker earth between the bed-rock and the "wall". This level is at 6.98 = 7.05 Discover 3 more intrusions at this level.
