13-4-382:E1 (from p. 173) of the "E. wall of 2:22". East of this wall the stoney strosis ends, nearly level, on slightly redder (but still not very red) sandy and gritty earth with relatively few stones. This strosis is at 11.40 West, by w. wall, = 11.63 East, where it dips to the circuit wall.

Continue clearing toward the wall. Here we are able to isolate a deep cutting full of stones, doubtless connected with the archaic rebuilding. This in turn is cut by a section of greyer earth, almost without stones. This goes to the inner face of the wall, which is at last discovered. The inner cutting seems to be covered by the Roman rebuilding.

Dig outside the wall, finding the same black strosis (with much ash) as in Tr. 3. Most of the fallen stones lie on this level. Photo 222 showing 2E2 at black level, 2E1 below, but before removing stones.
