TRENCH 3
Recommence work in Tr. 3 lower, removing fallen blocks and gradually finding the big wall. It is very unevenly built of stones of varying sizes. At 12.09 find a course of stones fitted to the wall. This rests on earth (Roman), so it is not of the same date as the wall.
16-3-37Reach bed-rock, upon which the wall rests, at 12.58. The earth contains Roman pottery clear to the rock. Isolate cuttings in the rock, perhaps tombs.
17-3-37Clear one of the pits in the rock. It is cut with fairly straight sides to a depth of (absolute ), where it stops, therefore not a tomb. Start clearing above the wall, to find its inner face. Find slight changes of earth at 11.21 and 12.69 11.43, perhaps not real levels. A more convincing level is at 11.36. On this we find a bronze ring and needle (p. 144, # 2-3).
