March 14CISTERN[page number: ⑤]

Start clearing cistern on South slope of Palaiokastro hill, from which figurines (archaic) have been removed in quantities. Collect many figurines and fragments, in "snow-man" technique, from ground around cistern. Keep our eyes out for Kourion's largest viper, which is said to dwell here. Not found

Remove stones & brush in mouth of cistern, and continue down. The earth seems disturbed to a considerable depth, and the figurines peter out after a while. The indication is that they were simply a modern dump from somewhere above the cistern, bi-products of illicit excavations.

Dig cistern to a depth of , which included a good section of undisturbed earth. Finding that the figurines have stopped entirely, we leave the cistern, and start a trench beside it.
