NOTES TO PLAN, p. 32

The brown earth is undisturbed ancient fill. The black, which is identical to the top-soil, represents recent disturbances. It is probable that this disturbance was caused by the removal of stones which were visible above ground. With the possible exception of the disturbance in Xo, which is not quite clear, the stones removed seem to have been the large blocks forming a portal, since the disturbed areas go just to door-cuttings. The disturbance in Yo, referred to above, may have been caused by the removal of a block which was not in-situ, or it may be that the door-cutting within the disturbed area was covered in the latest period of occupation, the door being narrowed to use only the two cuttings in Ψo. It is interesting to note the shallow cutting between the behind the two posts double post in Ψ. It does not reach the sill. It seems that the plunderers dug a bit here to see if they wanted to remove these stones, and then decided not to. The sill block missing from Xo must have been removed in antiquity, for the fill is of brown soil, identical to that in the undisturbed aves.
