wall appears to consist of mud only to which a small quantity of lime may have been added. In the restoration I am filling wall with mud mixed with gypsum and sealing the outside with colored gypsum. Mixture consists of 5 water, 4 1/2 parts gypsum (large mastrapa), 3 level teaspoonfuls of terracotta cement paint, 6 level teaspoons of yellow (ochre) and 1/4 of black. This produces something approaching color of many of the stones - near French gray - but it is too grey to match paint used by Mr. Hill in the restoration of the wall further west. Am lifting up small west door of room. The opening between the jambs diminishes 3/4 of a cm. in every 1.00 m. of height. For door and wall before lifting see Film 153-6,7, & 8. 2 men sent to clean Curium bluff - palace bath complex.
22 March51. Removed 00-3.00 m. s. of s. wall and 32.80-36.00 m. e. of west end, 2607-3. Very clean, loose soil containing very few stones, none larger than fist size. 17 small tile frags. which I am stacking on top of restored s. wall at end of corridor 2; about 1/3 bucket of sherds. No other finds. This stratum appears to be fill over ancient road the curb of which runs near s-wall of building. The foundation of the road(bottom of strat.) consists of rough stones averaging about double fist size. See Film 153-16. Removed 00-4.00 m. s. of s. Bldg. and 44.00-49.00 east of west end, 2613-1, loose soil varying from brown to red consisting of debris and decomposed wall. Many rough stones all sizes up to bucket size averaging about half foot size. These occurred under fallen worked blocks for which see draughtsman's drawing and Film 153-15 and 17, and about 1-23/ bucket of sherds and about 2 buckets of tiles which I am stacking at 44.00 m. east of west end on s. wall. From here come F 1692-1695. No other finds.
23 March51. Removed room 5, S. Bldg., east side, 2.00 m. - 6.00 m. north of s. wall, 2333-5, dark red soil, hard, with few stones only, rough ones averaging walnut size. No xxxx sherds or any other finds. - a natural undistubbed stratum over bedrock. See Film 153-21 & 22. Removed 00-3.00 m. s. of S. Bldg. 44.00-49.00 m. e. of w. end, 2613-2, very loose & clean light reddish brown soil with hardly any s[illegible]ntes - only very small ones none being larger than walnut size; possibly mortar from fallen wall (About 2/3 bucket sherds, about 1/5 bucket tiles which I am stacking under carob tree near fence. Lamp frags. probably Bronzer type XXVII, F 1696, and box of thin blown glass frags. F 1697, and figure of man's head, hollow & cylindrically shaped. F 1698. No other finds. Removed rooom 5, west side, 3.22-4.00 m. north of s. wall of building p. 2643-1 below stone pavement. See Film 153-23 & 24, a sealed deposit. The stone floor immediately above it is earlier than that which went with the coping blocks on the
west stylobate; consistently loose reddishbrown soil throughout with few stones only, rough ones averaging egg to fist size, fair number of these include chips; 15 tile frags. Am storing these in bag with F no. 1702. 2 lime concrete frags. placed in bag with tiles; stamped pot handle F 1699; lamp frags. F 1700; frag. head of figurine F 1701; no other finds. One shard frag. with very slight ribbing which may show that ribbing may have started as early as 1st century A.D. on very small scale. About 1/7 bucket sherds from sieve. Also coin found in situ F 1703. No other finds. The w. stylobate wall was constructed over this pavement that covers fill but rests on a foundation also in rough masonry but of far more careless construction under floor. This foundation is earlier than the pavement which in turn is earlier than the floor that lay behind the coping stones of the [illegible] stylobate.
24. Mar.51. Removed same place 2643-2, no change from 2643-1. 5 tile frags. and 1 pipe frag. placed in sherd bag. 2 handfuls of sherds. Stratum consistent throughout. No change near
walls either in fill or in character of sherds. Tiles found in center - also pipe. Very few small nondescript sherds from sieve placed in sherd bag. No … continues
