7 June 1949 Continued removing part of old dump about 10 m. north of room 3, bath. Continuing to dig out cistern. Removed all of 1467-9 up to 65 cm. of cistern walls, all dark, very dark soil, with few stones only, rough ones, averaging about half fist size. Down to stratum 9 there were many more stones and much larger ones. No thin blown glass or lamp fragments found in 9 to date although all soil has not gone through sieve. Stratum 10 being about 2 cm. below top of settling pit in center (page 1467). It has larger rough stones and more stones than 9, with portions blackened by chavara. A little glass - moulded glass of a heavy fabric - came from top of 10. The same fabric also occurs in 9.
Page 1478 The lead bowl, F[illegible], was found right side up with its base in 11 and its mouth in 10. Soil in 11 is fairly consistently very dark and heavy. Many sherds. The pottery when mended should produce some fairly complete pots. Stratum 10 produced a stamped amphora handle - F700. All the pottery in 11 being cleaned as found with a knife before removing. A few round stones from 10 - probably river stones. One rough stone measures 0.28 m., greatest dimension. Most of the pottery in 11 was lying at approximately the same level. The lowest had its lowest point at 0.43 m. A coin was found at 0.40 m. below cistern floor. Am leveling off at depth of coin after removing all pottery. The coin is F699. Ptolemy 116-80 B.C. Note some very small fragments of Roman lamps (first century A.D.) coming from sieve belonging to stratum 8, center. Began removing the rest of stratum 9, the stratum over the sistern floor from 0-65 cm. from the walls. No change from that removed from 65 cm. to center but all finds being removed separately. Mehmet under Mr. Hill's direction continues to dig in northwest corner of room 2, hypocaust, north of flue leading from room 3 and between pilasters and first row of piers.
