Began pi-P, stratum 1A which goes to greater depth here than further north. Top of second stratum here at 0.70m. below surface.

Stones in debris here are very much smaller though a great many of them. Hardly any large stones or worked stones at all(pi-P) west 8-10. Top of second stratum here nearly flush with bottom of orthostate course in wall running east-west. No tiles.

17 May 1948 Removing street 1, [handwritten: M-oxi], west 4-12, stratum 2. Great amount of fallen stones. Earth found among them cannot appear to have been either from bricks or mud roof. No straw. Reddish save where darkened by vegetation. All worked stones being left as found until drawn in situ-as usual. Tiles from 1A piled up and labeled near marble floor northwest corner west 2-6. Tiles west 6-12. None found. Tiles west 0-2 piled up on spot and labeled. Page 978

Removing street 1, theta-I, west 0-4, stratum 2. Much of soil here very powdery and gray in color-could this be result of fire? Not at all characteristic of soil which has been darkened only by vegetation. Few stones only from 0-2 west. Began removing second stratum west side of room south of east building. See film 110, number 1 and section page 971. First stratum here removed before war. West side of room would be trench 7. E-H plus, west0-2 plus two wall.

18 May Mr. Hill continues working in north end of alley (east of east building). See film 109, number 2 and 3. Removed F253-60 inclusive.

May 19 Digging trench 7, stratum 3, Z-theta to wall west 0-2 to wall. See section page 973. Street 1, K-M, west 0-4. Finished removing stratum 2 and began 3. Few stones or tiles found in 2. Reddish loose soil. See section page 975 and 895. Finished removing street 1, P-sigma, west 10-12, P-T, stratum 2 and began stratum3. Began digging trench 9, eta-theta, north 10-14, stratum 2. Worked stones on top of this stratum removed by draftsman after being drawn in situ. Mr. Hill digging in north part of alley-removing fallen wall, and immediately south end of alley. See film 100, numbers 12 and 13.

May 21 Dug trench 7, zeta-(zeta-100-H) west 1-2, stratum 4. See finds 280-284 inclusive. Tracing course of precinct wall on eastern periphery of site. Removing old dump east side temple A stairway. Digging street 1, P-T, west 10-12. second stratum contained fair number of stones. Third stratum very few except near wall at T (section page 971).

Trench 9, eta-theta (between walls), north 6-10, stratum 1. Many work stones. Tiles from 10-14 here (second stratum, see section page 983) placed on east wall near theta line of trench 9, and marked with tag in ink. Some marble fragments placed on wall by them. Tiles from eta-theta, north 5-10, placed in pile on north wall just east of theta line, marked with tag with ink-near eta-north 6 in stake. Many large worked blocks in stratum 1. Not very large - only average about 32 by 40 by 12.
