KALORIZIKI, TOMB 34 (Lot 87)

NB III, pp 24 ff.

Nov. 9, 1935Find Tomb no. 34 during the afternoon and begin clearing the dromos. It seems to be of the same type as Tombs 33 and 35, with long narrow dromoi.

Nov. 12to 13

Continue and finish clearing dromos of 34. No significant stroses were noted in the fill. Remove 7 packages of sherds, and clean large parts of an amphora and a bucchero jug by the door.

Nov. 14Photos D 5 and 6 of dromos.

Nov. 15Pots in Dromos:

X P 28551.Trefoil jug, bucchero.
X P 27982.Amphora frags.
X P 8553.Like 1, handle and part of lip gone.
X P 8564.Ditto in frags, rills very light.

Start opening tomb chamber. Two large bucchero jugs with twisted handles and an amphora with concentric circles on the shoulder were found jambed up against the stones closing the door.

Nov. 16Continue clearing chamber. Many pots appear.

Nov. 18Finish clearing the chambe r.

Nov. 19Photos E 1 and 2 of chambe r.

Remove 54 objects from the chamber (see below).

The amphora no. 51 contained human bones, minus the skull and legs, thus probably the missing part of the partial skeleton in situ.

Amphora no. 52 also contained human bones, apparently a complete skeleton. There was nothing in the arrangement or stratification of the tomb to indicate that the s econd skeleton (i.e., the one in no. 52) was ever buried prone in the chamber.
