KALORIZIKI-MERSINOUDHKIA CEMETERY

Trial Pits in Lots 85 and 87

November 6, 1935Photo C 8, of site before digging.

Sink six pits ca. 1.50 square, in two rows along the northwest side of the field.

In Pit b reach undisturbed earth at 0.40, and bed-rock at 1.10. Abandon it.

In Pit c--find two pots, one inside the other, on undisturbed earth at 0.75, 0.25 above bed-rock. There is no indication of their belonging to a tomb or grave. Abandon the pit.

Photo C 9 of pots in Pit c. Remove them: (1) bowl with base ring and flaring lip (2) ditto.

In pits d, e, and maybe f, we found tombs.

Start two more pits, g and h.

The bed rock here is of poor quality, sandy and soft, much like that in Kaloriziki. It seems that there are not many tombs here; in all events there are Many less than in Kaloriziki.

November 7Abandon pit a at a depth of ... --still disturbed earth, maybe a dromos.

In Pit d--Tomb no. 30. In Pit e--Tomb no. 31.

In Pit f we found bed-rock at 0.90, sloping off southeast to a depth of 1.80. It seems likely that this leads to a tomb of the type of Tomb 31. Due to the depth of the soil and the great labor involved in digging it we tell the laborers that there is no tomb, and leave it for the time being.

In Pit g we reach bed-rock at 0.90. It seems to be shelving off, and is of very poor quality, with a vein of earth beneath it.

Locate the door of Tomb 30, at the west end of the dromos.

Sink five pits along the edge of Lot no. 87 by Kaloriziki field, locating three tombs very close to the surface.
