KALORIZIKI, TOMB 18

NB I,1934,(McF),pp. 117 ff.

Stratum a

Skeleton with head pointed toward entrance. Shins missing, probably taken away by someone entering on north side as there is a marked change in the stratification on the north side of the tomb. Also, on floor south of tomb stones are found (see plan). Photos V 41,2,51.

Stratum b

Skeleton on floor b is oriented toward west (woman). Note one foot rests on stone. Conclusion: tomb found and cleaned to make room for someone else or another floor or entrance to another tomb below this floor of which the stones in floor b form the top. They may lie in their original place. These stones may, however, be an entrance to another tomb on the same level as b, and the upper stones may be missing simply because they were removed by those who may have cleaned the tomb out for someone else. Then these people placed the new person to be buried with one leg resting on one of the stones. Just south of the place where the skull should have been is the jaw of what may probably be a dog.
