Detailed Instructions for Reading Charts
Survey of Finds by Strata: Numbers in upper lefthand corner of squares are reported numbers of sherds found. Numbers in parentheses after these (when occurring) indicate actual number of sherds found at final control. [handwritten: × PD] Numbers in italics are sherd numbers, to be found in the catalogue. Numbers in heavy type (underlined in MS) are pot numbers, to be found in the catalogue. In the columns beginning with "Metal", all numbers are small find numbers, to be found in the catalogue.

Exact figures were often not obtainable for differentiation of plain wares, as much of this category was discarded by Daniel in the field. A plus sign after a number in the Plain Wheelmade II ware column indicates, therefore, that at least that many were found at time of control. As an alternative to figures, the words "all/most/well represented" (abbreviated "well rep.") and "represented" (abbreviated "rep.") have been used to convey information which was indicated in Daniel's notes in such a way that it could not be confirmed by actual count. An identification and discussion of every individual level shown on the charts occurs in the text in the same sequence as these occur on the charts themselves.
Percentages of Ceramic Categories by Strata: Percentages corresponding to the distribution of wares in principal levels of Areas A-E have been worked out to the nearest tenth or to the nearest hundredth, where a large number of sherds involved made this necessary for the sake of accuracy. The percentage of plain wares comes almost invariably from Daniel's records. Since he did not break this category down into any finer differentiation, only incomplete
