BAMBOULA Tr 20:12 (E.VII.11 according to Daniel; no designation in Weinberg's system) (VIII:19;11-5-39) Remove the tumble in the door between 20;12 and 20:9. It goes to soft brown earth, below which is the same grey level as at 9.01-9.08 in 20:12 and 8.98 in 20:9. Photo Bam '39.164 of door cleared to grey level. Dig below 9.01-9.08 through sandy brown earth with much ash, and start to find a white floor, at 9.01(w)-9.25(center)-9.37 (E). There was ash over the floor in the E. (Same:15-5-39) This level is very irregular. White is found in most of the northern section, at various levels, but brown earth in the south, at 9.08. Dig below 9.08 in the south. Photo Bam '39.183 at 9.01-9.25-9.37. Dig below 9.08 through red-brown earth with fine gravel, finding similar earth with small stones at 9.28(b). Dig below 9.01 in a, finding gritty loose brown earth at 9.18. (Same:18-5-39) Dig below 9.18 in a, finding [illegible] gritty level at 9.30. Dig below 9.25 in d, finding gritty brown earth, in places hard, at 9.61. Dig through loose light brown earth, finding a gritty white level at 9.41, in c. Find loose brown earth in section f. (VII:43;19-5-39) Dig below 9.30 in a, through gritty red earth, finding a similar but firmer level at 9.60. Dig below 9.61 in d, finding red-brown clayey earth with white grits, and ash over it, at
Tr 20:13 (E.V.10) (VII:101;19-4-39) Photo Bam '39.70 of 20:13 with intrusion cleared to tumble. Photo Bam '39.71 of 20:13 cleared to earth over floor (8.98) (IX:19;26-10-48) Clear in north, where flagged floor is destroyed, below the bottom of the intrusion. Immediately come on another oven, resting in part against bed-rock, in part on earth. It goes under the flagging and under the wall to 20:14, which rests directly on the clayover the ash. Several fragments of an LCIII painted jug were found in the ash, jammed up against the corner of the wall and the edge of the preserved floor. They must belong with these rather than the furnace. cf. IX: 143, 145
Tr 20:14 (E.V.9) (VII:157;3-5-39) Digging through brown earth below 9.05 we find a change to redder earth at 9.30. The stone tumble continues on down. Dig below 9.30 and find very firm clayey earth at 9.45. The tumble still continues. Photo Bam'39.87 at 9.45. (Same;4-5-39) Dig through the 9.45 level and find the sandy grey earth which lies over a chavara floor, at 9.48. There is a light grey mud facing on the E. wall at this level. (Same;8-5-39) We have dug below the 9.48 level, finding a chavara plaster floor at 9.44(N)-9.49(S). The southern part rises, dropping sharply in the last meter to the north. This seems to be due to settling over a filled tomb. Photo Bam '39.147 at 9.44-9.49
