BAMBOULA Tr 20:6 (E.IV.5) (VII:95;17-4-39) In 20:6 top soil endas at level with much brick and clear signs of burning. This ends at [handwritten: on a chavara floor], burned black by the debris which fell over it. 20:6 is separated from 20:7 by a sharp cutting in the bed-rock. A habitation level of clayey earth much marked by burning, is found at [handwritten: 8.70]. (VIII:41;17-5-39) Dig below 8.70, through burnt matter with some brick and fragments of mud, and find a plaster floor with numerous pots, one sunk in a pit, at 8.95. Photo Bam '39. 198-200.
Tr 20:8 (E.V.6) (VII:95;18-4-39) In 20:8 red tumble and the top of a N-S wall on the east side are found at 8.65. Digging below this we find mixed tumble going down to a packed earth floor, mixed but generally greyish, on which are many fragments of pottery, at 8.76 in the north. In the south the earth over the floor is redder, and the wall is preserved only to a lower level.
Tr 20:9 (E.IV.3) (VII:101;19-4-39) In 20:9 red earth is found at 8.65. Digging below this a redder level is found at 8.70. Digging below 8.70 through typical red tumble, pottery begins to appear, as well as many stones at the south, at 8.75. (VII:115;24-4-39) Photos Bam '39 75-4 at 8.82. We have cleared to a distinct floor at 8.82. It is of grey-brown earth with great quantities of small bits of chavara. The rim of a pithos projects just above the floor, which is cut for it. It thus belongs to the 8.82 level. (Same:26-4-39) Digging below 8.82 we have found a gritty reddish-brown level at 8.96. Digging below 8.96 we start to find a sandy dark grey level, probably a floor, at 8.98. Dig below 8.98 and find a floor of clay and chavara at 8.99. cf. II:139; 2-7-54 and II:147
Tr 20:10 (E.V.4) (VII:17;27-3-39) About 15 m. south of pit A se sink another pit, B. Red earth is reached 0.20 from the surface. This goes down without any obvious change, to what appears to be a broad stairway, of bedrock-rock below, and firm chavara paving above. A broad cutting in the rock, apparently the foundation trench of a wall, runs along the N. side of the stairway. Two deep narrow circular holes in front of the wall seem to be post-holes.
