BAMBOULA (TR 2:2)
(III:107;2-3-37) In unit 2 find the floor-smoothed bed rock-at 0.60. Ten centimeters aboye there had been a change in earth.
(III:165;22-3-37) Clear in unit 2 to a floor of brown earth at 8.69. This level wanders out to the north with no wall showing. Called "floor above rock". Skim areas 8and9 trying to isolate intrusions. Dig through 8.69 floor in unit 2, [handwritten: ?] finding the bed-rock, very uneven, at 8.98 to 9.21. We isolate a large surface intrusion which had gone unobserved until now. Find a cutting in the rock, with a flat stone in it, at 8.99. This must be a post support.
(V:119;22-3-38) Clear off a certain amount of dark earth which was left on the 8.98-9.21 level when first cleared, and finish clearing the intrusion. Towards 2:1 a d 2:5 we leave for later inverstigation a strip of apparently undisturbed red clayey earth. A pit at the upper corner of the trench, left originally as an intrusion, goes down from the 8.98-9.21 level with red gritty earth. and contains the pithos, p.116 no.3 Photos Bam 164-5 of pithos in situ. Remove the pithos finding a stone under it.
(III:127;24-3-38) Cut the red earth in the S. and E. of the unit, leaving a section along the wall to 2:5. Gritty red earth goes to 9.15. Close to the wall to 2:1 there is a clear footing trench cut through sandy red earth with much grey-green braxos, and find bed rock at • The footing trench to 2:1 is wider at this point.
