Area E 1954 Extension of Trench 20 (20:15a)

In 1954 a short campaign was undertaken to the east and southeast of Trench 20 to determine the extent of the [handwritten: factory?] district and its relation to the settlement. It appeared that the area of the hearths did not extend beyond the line of Tr.20 as dug by Daniel, despite the fact that the "vast rock cutting" noticed by him extended some distance (ca. 5 m.) to the east of the cutting. House V.8 continued to the edge of the hearths. The red earth fill under House V.8 covering the tumble of a wall which must have stood above and along the edge of the cutting in the bedrock, covering the tumble of a wall which must have stood above and along the edge of the cutting during the period of use of the furnaces. [handwritten: A fragment of a handmade hanging lamp, Sh 753, was found near the bottom of this tumble.] Sh 753 in lamp-tumble A single hearth was found on the edge of Daniel's Trench 20 a few centimetres below the lowest level dug by him. It is thus evident that he had not reached bedrock as he supposed. Bedrock was reached in a trial pit about 20 cm. below the level of the hearth. 33 sherds of pithoi and coarse ware, predominantly handmade, plus a lampholder fragment were found.
