AREA E DANIEL HOUSE IV [handwritten: (E.VI)]

The stratification of house IV is fairly simple. All levels assigned to house I and III antedate house [handwritten: VII] [handwritten: II] [handwritten: VIII] [handwritten: V] and [handwritten: IV]. Houses V and IV on the other hand, are in part later than III. The construction of the house is dated by 1) a) the foundation trenches, sunk through the remains of house III; and b), the deep fill of the podium. The material which appears to be flooring matter, over the fill in the podium perhaps also dates from the construction of the house. Accumulation of the period of use of the house, 2), was found only in A.IV.1. The only wall debris, 3), assigned with certainty to house IV was that found in E.V.a. This debris fell from the southern wall of house IV, which apparently remained standing later than the house as a whole. It fell over deposit of later date than the construction or use of house house V, which is probably of later date than the construction or use of house IV. The latest material associated with the remains of house IV consists of the sherds found in the trenches through which the stones of the walls were removed. These, 4), postdate the destruction of the house; they still belong, however, to the L.C.III period.

1) a) The following sherds were found in the foundation trenches for the north, east, and south walls of E.IV.4: [handwritten: VI.1] [handwritten: +3] 10 sherds L.C.II plain ware 2 " L.H.III 12 sherds [handwritten: (5) + in cutting for LC.II wall (1948 E.VI.2) pl VII,123, 125 etc. and publications, Sheldon p.142 + p.160 (also 154)] [handwritten: + 1 mm] [handwritten: big minim]

b) The gritty fill of the podium was excavated at the following levels: [handwritten: VI.2] [handwritten: VI.1] E.IV.3, 7.33 to 7.71/7.95; E.IV.4, 7.33/7.69 to 7.72/8.06. The sherds were the following: [handwritten: P.W.M.II (1) north/ Levanto Myc.] 65% plain sherd 1 " L.H.III 3 " L.H.III, coarse tempered 1 " White Slip II 7 " White Slip I 4 " Base Ring II 2 " Wash ware 2 " Light burnished 21 decorated sherds Red Polished
