AREA E
Area E was excavated during the season of 1939. In most of the section the excavation were carried to the bed-rock or to floors lying immediately over the rock. In the southwestern part the excavation stopped at L.C.III strata; earlier [handwritten: levels] [handwritten: remains] below these remain to be dug.
Area E is the second largest section excavated on Bamboula. It is seventy meters long and has a maximum breadth of twenty three meters. Numerous soundings in adjacent regions add considerably to the effective size of the area. Area E proper lies on the northern slope of Bamboula, running down to the top of the bluff which flanks the old carriage road from Limassol to Paphos. The cliff is now about two meters high; the accumulation of silt at its foot [handwritten: is effective height was about in antiquity, prior to] [handwritten: Twice flat.]
Area E consists geographically of five main parts. The first extends from the southwestern edge of the excavated area to an ancient street, which crosses a dip in the bluff, and enters the town at right angles to the cliff. House remains of the L.C.III period were found in this section, lying in part over earlier remains which have not yet been excavated. The second section consists of the street and a large open space to which it led. No remains of houses were found here, but tombs were found under both the street and the open space beyond. Northeast of the street is a large rectangular depression in the rock.
In this third section we found remains of houses of the L.C.II and L.C.III periods. These houses go in part on to a higher fourth section, adjacent on the northeast. This section runs along the bluff to the northeastern end of Area E, containing remains of houses of all stages of the Late Bronze Age. The Eastern section, finally, contains scanty remains of a large building of the Archaic period. Numerous soundings to the east and northeast of Area E revealed tombs but no settlement remains. This is part of the main necropolis of the city.
