AREA D

A provisional list of the finds is trench 16 may be made now. It must be stressed that this is far from complete, though it is representative for the areas and levels listed. Only a few of the complete or largely complete vases have been mended.

Many sherds found in the lower part of the building debris belong to vases which were on the floor at the time of the collapse of the building. When these are removed from the sherds of the debris and joined to the pots to which they belong, the percentage of L.C.III sherds now reported from the debris will be greatly reduced, making more striking its predominantly L.C.II character.

None of the original floors has been cut through, and no foundation trench cleared. We thus have no certain evidence for the date of the construction of the houses, though this may, perhaps, be inferred from the earlier elements in the cellar, which almost certainly date from a time when the houses were occupied.

Four stages may be distinguished in the deposits excavated: A, the cellar, presumably contemporary to the period of use of the house, with a bulk of material belonging late in that period; B(1), the accumulation over the floors, representing a late stage in the occupation; B(2) pottery found on the accumulation, crushed when the houses collapsed; C, the building debris, containing material dating from the construction of the house, with a few sherds from vases in use when the house collapsed, and other stray sherds of late date.
