AREA A STRATUM E HOUSE A.VI

The following stratification was observed in house A.VI, and the following vases and sherds were found. A comparison with the above description of the house will give some indication of what is relatively early and what is late in stratum E(2).

E(1) The sherds in the foundation trench for the stairway (?) in room 5 date from the construction of the house. They are:

40% plain 8 sherds Ware VII of AJA, 1937 (Sh112, 113) [handwritten: Sh65, 66] 2 Wash ware [handwritten: ?] [handwritten: not accounted for on cards] 10 decorated sherds

E(2) The following sherds and pots were found on the floors, on and in accumulation, and in the pits, fireplaces, etc. of stratum E. Owing to an inconsistency in recording the sherds in the field, some of the sherds which have been mended up into pots may be included a second time among the sherds. Also some of the sherds listed as L.C.III painted may be Submycenaean. The reverse is not true. The following vases were found in a more or less complete state:

Submycenaean: [handwritten: Bowl sherd] 2 bowls (P790, 815) 1 amphoriskos (P764) [handwritten: LC III Dec innkde] [handwritten: Myc III C.2] 1 neck-amphora (P754) [handwritten: LC III Dec]

Handwritten: P796

The sherds were the following:

Handwritten: 71 PWM II, 8 Minoan

E(3) The building debris dating from the collapse of house A.VI at the end of period E contained the following sherds. Additional material is listed under E(3) in the street.

Handwritten marginal note: E 2-3 has much mixed and in-situ; contemporary with E 3 in general
