A more nearly level of greyish sandy earth with some stones ends at reddish sandy soil.

Removing the level of flat stones and sherds set in mud, we come in the south to a clear body of sun-dried brick, running from the "wall" in the S.W. to the "brick and stone" wall of V.Grace's sounding. A mass of fallen (or filled) brick extends E. from this, apparently as far as the circuit wall.

13-11-48Removing fallen brick in the section immediately N. of the VG sounding we find a facing of a thick and rather soft sandy mud along the face of the brick and coming down on the masonry wall in the VG cutting. North it slopes out onto a more or less level layer of brick, 0.30 below the level of the E. wall. At a point 1.10 N. of the rock outcropping, the sandy clay turns east at right angles. Apparently this is only a change in tumble.

15-11-48Start digging down in the western part of the VG section, after having finally located the brick wall on 13-11-48. Clear off the upper tumble to show the stones in it.

16-11-48The level that was left as bedrock for 1.30 along the west is actually a deep fill overlying earlier deposit, apparently put in as a road- or ramp-bed for the archaic wall. It lies over a loose fill of stones and earth, which may be part of the characteristic fill of the archaic wall.

Remove the loose stone fill and come on to the sloping stone pavement found before. This runs down on to the stones of the wall proper, with a line of three stones facing it in the angle, and sweeps steeply up to just below the surface of the outcropping to the S. It consists of stones and sherds set in mud, with occasional patches of gravel.
