BAMBOULA
CIRCUIT WALL
(IV:89; 20-4-37)
Clear to the bottom of the circuit wall outside. It does not go to rock, but lies on red earth. Two dec. sherds were found in the earth below the wall, one of an uncertain painted ware, the other Wash ware. Undisturbed red earth with L.C.III sherds was found at the bottom of the big intrusion inside the wall.
(V:23; 18-5137)
I have had one man digging for several days in the circuit wall are shown on p.18. The sequence of strata has been the following:
1.plowed top soil.
2.unplowed top soil, ending with a fairly level bed of stones, without apparent order, but stopping roughly with the outer face of the wall.
3.stones (#2), lying on and in gummybrown earth, not an integral part of any masonry. These stones lie on and among the top layer inside and out, of the outer circuit wall, and go to strosis 3a east and 4 in the west. 3a.(Early) a thick layer of stones looking like tumble, and apparently going under the present inner face of the outer wall. These are in the E and lie upon and against the earlier strosis in the west.
4.Below #3 in the west (11.45 to 11.65). Cleaner grey brown earth with coarse sand. The stones of strosis 3 do not continue into it.
5.Clean brown earth with some blue-grey mud. Below #4 and over #6, preserved only in the NW corner. This layer is below the tops of the walls which have appeared N and W. Top at 11.57.
6.Below #5, red brown earth with much brick, doubtless building tumble. Top at 11.59.
7.Brown earth, fairly firm. Top at 11.76 (N) to 11.75(S).
Dig through the 11.76 to 11.75 level (strosis 7) and find a solid floor of grey sand, at 11.86 to 11.79.
