Jeffery "A Description of the Historic Monuments of Cyprus" (Nicosia 1918) 382] or three at the most', and they may not actually have been fully complete, perhaps just large sections of a column. [inserted: [underlined] If [illegible] [/inserted] There is at least a chance that the fragment now in the theatre was one of those seen by Ross. At some distance from the actual site, lying in the so-called Sanctuary of Demeter5 just east of the stadium are two more sizeable fragments of spirally fluted columns. The material of these is reported as basalt - which, while not 'blaülicher Marmor', is at least of a dark color, so that their color might have been confused if the columns were, [inserted: not examined individually but some were [/inserted] merely seen at a distance. Still further from the site -

in the village of Episkopi in the courtyard of Curium House, former excavation headquarters of the Curium Expedition of the University Museum, Philadelphia - is to be found [illegible] another fragment of similar dark stone. A thorough canvass of the neighborhood might produce even more fragments of this sort. How and when the fragments just cited reached their present position the villagers do not seem to remember. However, it seems a likely guess that these are part of the material seen by Ross and that local builders may have removed them from Curium for some purpose which was never carried through. [inserted: circled asterisk In any case, this ex planation is strengthened by the fact that there are no ancient monumental building near the present location of the fragments to which they might have belonged. [/inserted]
[margin left: circled asterisk A similar case of reported columns not being found by later excavators may be cited from Salamis: cf. JHS XII (1891) 62] Further discussion of the relationship of these column fragments must be preceded by a detailed description of them, which is best given in chart form.
