Spirally Fluted Columns at Curium

Margin left: one twistednin front of shrine\non one NPres\nno more data available

More than a century ago fragments of spirally fluted columns were observed among the ruins of the city of Curium, on the southwest coast of Cyprus, near Episkopi, Limassol: (L. Ross, AZ III 1845, 102). "einige spiralförmige cannelirte Säulen aus bläulichem Marmor" It is not possible to be certain from this early mention exactly where the columns lay. They are described as being at the inner end of the city, that is toward the interior of the island. Since, however, the city is roughly parallel to the sea coast this does not tell us whether the columns seen were at the west end of the city, near the basilica and gate, or at the east end

This presumably means at the East end which would be in the general area of the Theatre, although Ross does not bring them into connection with the theatre (For a general plan of mention of PW sv. In view of this report one may well wonder if these are not the fragments which are now scattered about in at least two spots relatively distant from the site of Curium. Two large column fragments are in the so-called

a sizeable fragment of a spirally fluted column came to light in the orchestra of the theatre itself. It is possible, but by no means certain, that this fragment was visibleat all to Ross. Yet another fragment of a smaller spirally fluted column lies now just south of the basilica. These two, to my knowledge, are the only fragments of this type of column now in thein any case area but near the other end of the city.
