inscription is a matter of small import, for [handwritten: nay]not only were baptisms occasionally performed in martyria [handwritten: 555] but there was often a striking similarity between martyria and baptisteries. [handwritten: 556] Since there were octagonal frigidaria, this octagonal shape is not of [handwritten: itself] itself sufficient to warrant the use of the building at Narlika as a baptistery-indeed,one of the reasons for a baptistery being octagonal is the octagonal conjunction with plan of many frigidaria- but in [handwritten: 557] and of the the octagonals in the mosaic of the frigidarium [handwritten: 558] weight. south portico,it is [handwritten: xx] of some [handwritten: xxx] weight.

The chief reason for considering this building a baptistery is the representation of [handwritten: Eumenes] Σωτηρία. This figure is not only emphasized by the octagonal within which it is placed but by the larger and larger concentric circles which surround it.

This surrounding a central [handwritten: 4] by circles is analogous to the pictures and designs in a dome.Indeed as this building had a dome, this floor mosaic is an echo [handwritten: 559] of what might have been placed on the ceiling, for as Karl Lehman,in part quoting L.Curtius has stated," a persistent relationship exists between ceilings and floor decorations. In most cases, we see projected upon the floor the schemes which were developed on ceilings. Sometimes, as early as the first century B.C., we meet a direct representation of a [handwritten: 560] ceiling on a floor,as if it were reflected in a mirror."
