The West wall of Exedra 4.
(Film 168-2, diagram, plan )
This wall, which is like the east wall has been cleared on its east face to bedrock from 2.90 m. to 6.00 m. north of the south face of the south wall. On the west face it is exposed from 2.30 m. to 7.55 m. north and from 14.00 m. to 14.65 m. north. Elsewhere it has not been cleared below course 2. The rubble foundation where examined reaches down to bedrock (diagram, fig. ). Above the foundation there are two courses in ashlar work with blocks, measuring between 0.52 m. and 1.50 m. in length, which extend through the thickness of the wall of approximately 0.55 m. Above course 2 the wall was in rough masonry which is preserved to a maximum height of +0.23. The ashlar block in course 2 at the north end rests on earlier masonry at level - 0.39 m. It is not bonded into the north wall but terminates slightly short of its inside face. In order to lay this orthostate it was necessary to destroy an early wall down to level - 0.39 m.
This wall which is in part preserved in exedra 5 was there re-used to serve on the east arm of the east stylobate wall. It was also necessary to cut through an early floor contemporaneous with this early wall, just east of the east face of the orthostate (film 169-11). (See also p. under stylobate walls of exedra 4 and exedra 5) North of this early floor there is a rubble foundation of some structure which was raised to the level of the floor in order to construct the north wall of the building over it and to lay the paved floor, not extant, between the north wall and the west arm of the west stylobate of exedra 4 over the early floor. This rubble remains of an early foundation was also cut through to lay the north end of the west wxedra wall.
