East wall of exedra 4.

This wall is like the other east and west walls of exedrae 1,2 and 3. The east face has been cleared down to bedrock from the south end to 7.55 m. north and from 12.30 m. to the portico wall. The west face is not exposed. Elsewhere the wall is not cleared below level -0.50 m. The rubble foundation where examined reaches down to bedrock. From 12.30 m. to the north end the foundation course barely projects beyond the face of the wall. Above the foundation there are two courses in ashlar work with blocks measuring from 1.02 m. to 1.20 m. in length which extend through the thickness of the wall of approximately 0.55 m. Above course 2 the wall was in rough masonry which preserved to a maximum height of level plus 0.34 m. At the north end a threshold block rests on the top of the wall which here is at level plus 0.02 m. The height of the threshold is 0.18 m. This wall is nowhere bonded to either the portico or south wall but terminates against their inside face. At 15.60 m. north, however, there is a stone at the top of the extent wall at level plus 0.29 m. which projects about 0.14 m. west of the west face of the wall into the foundation of a stairway in the east arm of the east stylobate of exedra 4 (See below p. 2 under stylobate walls, and fig. Film 169-4).
