from the Aegean region seems to be indicated.{sup 60} But the most similar object in both shape and size, although of a different material, viz. a seal from Aplike [handwritten: which] may have been used for stamping copper ingots (see below) S3, the Penny that the latter may be a model for also has some resemblance [handwritten: in shape] with S3, the Penny that the latter may be a model for stone stamp gains in attractiveness. This Taylor refers to another example from Sinda, as yet apparently unpublished. There are in the Cyprus Museum a few others {sup 62} not obtained in regular excavation and not therefore entirely datable. in intaglio,
On the stamp face is a quadruped facing right with forelegs placed up on an uncertain object which lies horizontally and has two vertical protuberances.{sup 5} The beast has an outspread wing (?) on either side in front, attached to its breast(?). The head is rendered vaguely with perhaps something above it. Daniel described it as the "tufted head of a bird of prey". All in all, the most likely interpretation of this beast is as a griffin, although, in view of the summary and rather crude workmanship, I should not categorically exclude any other suggestion. The object on which he griffin is standing has suggested to me, no doubt best interpreted (considered) to be a Pacheri ware gas Rudiment on the Aplike piece, which has a crude bull's head. note S3 to the representation on the Aplike piece, which has a crude bull's head. The style of the representation - the sofa as we can speak of Style in So crude a design - seems to connect it with the Minoan-Mycenean world.
The first parallel which might spring to mind upon seeing it is the Lion Gate at Mycenae; and indeed similar motifs - whatsoever their ultimate oriental derivation - occur on Mycenean artefacts, such as an ivory plaque{sup 63} found in the House of the Sphinxes. On this same piece one of many occasions in somewhat the same position as that of S3. In many position of the Bamboula animal is also attested in fragments of an irony pyxis from the same House of Sphinxes. The parallels cited, being in a Late Helladic III context, suggest a possible date for the version on which the Bamboula design no doubt a local version - is dependent.
